Bio

The band Gapminder started up in 2008, hosting members from Stord and Haugesund, on the West Coast of Norway. Their debut album, Haematoma, was released in 2022.

The band is now releasing their second album Elements on their own Pretentious Chords Records. The album is available on Spotify from October 17. The first single Dreamer from the album was released on Spotify earlier in October 2024. The album is also available on vinyl.

The band name, Gapminder, was inspired by the thought of being aware of and creating space in music. Maybe also connected to the essence of football. Finding and creating space is a major task in football. Several of the members have backgrounds from football. The first years of the band`s history was spent on creating a foundation for our tonal universe. Mainly guitar based, with drums and bass and often with ambient layers and different voice samples on top. A touch of post-rock and prog with elements from jazz and classical music. After some time the piano was introduced and scattered around as themes in the songs. We spend some effort in creating sound designs as an ambient background. On our new album Elements we have also introduced vocal arrangements. The music has been described as cinematic.

The lyrics are inspired by local writers and French philosophy, with an existential orientation and often associated around the 4 Elements. We have our studio near the ocean and there is much weather; wind, rain and different kinds of light surrounding our musical home and space.

The album Elements was recorded, mixed and mastered in Ocean Sound Studio outside of Ålesund, Norway.
